The clocks have gone back, evenings are darker earlier, there’s a chill in the air… it doesn’t take much to persuade me to hunker down. However, learning a new skill? With friends? From the comfort of my own home? I’m in!
I recently signed up for a two-hour calligraphy course with eight friends. Gemma, the instructor, came prepared with books, pens, cards, envelopes and her extensive knowledge of calligraphy. Friends, Prosecco, snacks, new skill - what’s not to love?!
You’re never too old to learn a new skill. It’s great for your brain - they can rewire as they learn something new - and cognitive test results can improve. Interacting with others is also great from a social perspective - meeting new people, socialising, sharing common interests - we’ve all become a little housebound since Covid. Learning a new skill can also reduce stress, improve your confidence, your sense of wellbeing and reduce anxiety. You can feel more empowered, less alone and more self assured.
I’ve had nothing but positive reports from our calligraphy evening and many of my friends are keen to try something else. There’s such a vast array of skills out there to choose from, including watercolour or acrylic painting, life drawing, yoga, chess, bridge, a silver workshop, or, for the hardcore, maybe learning an instrument or new language.
The girls would like to learn crochet next. I’ve suggested salsa dancing. The WhatsApp group has been very quiet in response to my idea. What new skill would you like to learn?
